It's not about perfection - why we love Ballet Exams!
Celebrating progress, effort and little wins along the way!

So… what’s the deal with dance exams?
(And no, you don’t have to do one)
“Do I have to do an exam?”
“What’s the point of it anyway?”
Totally fair questions - and ones we hear often!
At Dance Division, ballet and jazz exams are never compulsory, but we do encourage students to give them a try when they feel ready. Exams are an amazing opportunity to grow both as a dancer and as a person. That said, if your child isn’t quite there yet, that’s okay too! We’ll always support their decision and keep the door open for next year.
Why do dance exams exist?
Dance exams aren’t just about ticking a box or getting a certificate. The SFD syllabus (which we follow at Dance Division) is carefully designed to develop technique in a safe, age-appropriate way - avoiding things like overstretching or rushing strength-based skills before bodies are ready.
Progressing too quickly without strong foundations can actually hold a dancer back long term. Exams ensure your child is developing all the tools they need: physically, mentally and emotionally.
Exams also take into account things like focus, coordination, musicality, and comprehension - so when a student moves up, they’re set up for success.
What are the benefits?
We’ve seen first-hand the confidence that comes from achieving an exam goal. Whether it’s their very first Level 1 Ballet or a big solo Intermediate Jazz exam, students walk out taller (literally and figuratively!).
Exams also help foster:
- Motivation – having a goal to work toward can re-energise students mid-year.
- Commitment – sticking to a routine, showing up to practice, and doing your best even when it’s tricky.
- Pride – the joy of saying, “I did that!”
Yes, nerves are totally normal! Especially at Level 3 and above, when students take their exam without their teacher beside them. But we’ve seen so many hesitant students absolutely thrive after stepping up. One of our past Level 3 students wasn’t going to do her exam at all - until a quiet pep talk and a bit of encouragement turned things around. She ended up doing beautifully… and the boost in her confidence was priceless.
What’s the exam actually like?
No scary auditoriums or bright lights here — Dance Division exams are held right here at the studio in a calm, familiar space. Students go in small groups of 5 or 6, and for Levels 1 and 2, their teacher is right beside them the whole time.
Examiners from the Southern Federation of Dance are warm, supportive and genuinely want students to succeed. Think of them more as friendly cheerleaders than judges in black robes.
As Susan Tan, SFD Examiner and President, puts it:
“It’s in the process - refining steps, building musicality, repeating, and mastering both sides — that true growth happens. Exams develop strong, well-rounded dancers who understand their craft.”
We couldn’t agree more!
